What’s The Truth About Ecommerce History

The history of Ecommerce started before the first Internet connection. It was in the 1960s when crucial steps were made to pave the way for ecommerce.

It was in the 1960s when EDI was first developed. EDI means Electronic Data Interchange. This is a set of standards for electronic transactions and exchange of business information. Despite this development, many companies were still unable to transact business electronically due to the difference in EDI formats. It was only in 1984 when ASC x12 became the standard used for large electronic transactions that made it possible for companies to transact business electronically.

In 1992, Mosaic, the first click web browser was developed. Netscape, the first downloadable browser based on Mosaic was also developed which gave people Internet access and participate in electronic commerce. This is what paves the way in the history of ecommerce that lead to the widespread usage of ecommerce today.

The invention of DSL gave users more ease in doing ecommerce and it was in the 1998 Christmas season when the record for most ecommerce sales was made. AOL had a $1B recorded online sales for that same season.

Computer users were given a choice when Red Hat Linux was developed. Consumers now can choose between the reliable open-sourced Linux and Windows. This forced Windows to expand aggressively in their ability to handle ecommerce.

It was in 1999 when Napster was founded and it started out as a site were people can share music files for free and its creation was a huge impact in ecommerce history. As it grew more popular, consumers can now suggest what they wanted to see in the site and in ecommerce. When Aol and Time Warner emrged in 2000, it also merged an established traditional company with a relatively new online company. It was also in 2000 when Yahoo, Amazon.com and Ebay became popular sites. Their popularity made them vulnerable against computer hackers thus creating a need for higher Internet security. This attack made ecommerce history as the push for more secure browser and security features become remarkable.

Even traditional companies started having online presence especially now that all major retail players like Wal-Mart Borders, and Sears have included ecomemrce in their means of generating income. $700B worth of business to business transactions changed hands in 2001. Ecommerce has really made online shopping more convenient to consumers and its popularity made it clear that ecommerce’s history is not a done deal yet.
