How to Choose and Purchase Your Domain Name

May 24th, 2009 admin No comments

One of the very first steps you need to take when setting up your business online is to choose and purchase a domain name for your website. Buying a domain name is actually cheap and easy, but there are some things to consider when choosing the best domain name for your business.

If you have a domain name that gives people an idea of what it is that you’re offering, it will make your site that much easier for them to not only find, but to actually visit. For example, the name of my website is www.ClientAbundance.com, so when people come across my URL anywhere, they can take an educated guess that what I’m offering relates to getting lots of clients.

This is what makes it so important to get a UNIQUE domain name, and not a sub-domain name (for example, www.WebHostingName.com/thenameofyoursite). And a unique domain name gives your website credibility and a much more polished and professional look.

Something else that’s important for you to know is that once you purchase your unique domain name, you own it. So no matter how many times you change web hosts, you, as the owner of that domain name, have the right to take it with you. If you have a sub-domain with your web host, that web host actually owns the domain name.

And just as important, if you do end up moving your website to a different host, all your marketing efforts to date will not have gone to waste because your customers and clients will still be able to find you under your unique domain name.

Your unique domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers, but it cannot include any special characters, except for hyphens (because the search engines actually prefer hyphens!). It can be as short as two characters or as long as 67. The shorter and catchier your domain name, the more likely people will remember it. Just don’t make it hard to spell… :)

Another strategy for increasing your search engine rankings with your domain name is to choose a domain name that includes the keywords that your niche is searching for. That’s not always possible, especially as more and more people get savvy about internet marketing and snap up those domains. But search engines do give more weight to domain names that include keywords because they have higher relevancy to what people are actually searching for. For example, www.howtobakeacake.com would get higher search engine rankings than www.sweetsandthings.com.

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked is whether or not to register any other domain levels, like .net and .org. I always strongly suggest to get a .com first. If you don’t, you are losing potential clients and customers. Most people (and web browsers) will default to a .com first. Remember, you always want to make it as easy as possible for people to find you online.

But, in addition, you should also consider buying the .net and .org domains as well, just so you’re not losing traffic to another site with the same name but a different extension. And since domain names are so cheap, there’s really no reason not to.

Another tip to consider is to purchase common misspellings of your domain name as well. For example, for my name (which I also recommend you register), I own www.aliciaforest.com and www.aliciaforrest.com.

Once you’ve decided on a domain name, you can check to see if it’s available at www.powerpipe.com. If it is, you can register it there and park it for free for $7.99 per year. I’ve been using PowerPipe for over 5 years and find them to be not only extremely competitively priced, but also to have excellent customer service. They also offer a free domain name brainstorming tool in case you need it. (I don’t get anything for recommending them; I’m just a happy customer). So now you know what to consider when choosing your domain name(s), and you have an excellent resource for registering them.

So don’t wait any longer to claim your space on the web!

Domain Name IP Address And What Are They For?

May 5th, 2009 admin No comments

When we talk about domain name, we are basically referring to an address of a web site that is primarily intended for an easy and quick identification. Speaking of these user-friendly addresses for web sites, these help connect both computers and people on the internet.

Given such fact, it is interesting to know that the domain name is understood as string of letters or numbers that is used to describe an IP address. This is the primary function of the domain name in the field of the internet. So, since the domain name and IP address are somewhat connected, I will be using the term “domain name IP address” in this article’s sense. So please bear with me.

Ah, but what is a domain name IP address? Or, an IP address in general? For your information, the acronym IP stands for Internet Protocol. This is so called as domain name IP address for the reason that this is the numeric address of any domain on the internet. As it is commonly noted, domain name IP addresses are much similar with telephone numbers. I am sure that you know that there is a common name listed in the phonebook that is associated with a long string of numerals pertaining to a specific telephone.

Aside from that, it is also interesting to know that speaking of the domain name IP addresses; others noted that the domain name IP addresses are like the reference numbers that are applied to categorize the books in a library. As the library codes apply for you to know the title of a book to find in the library, the domain name IP addresses also function somewhat that way.

Essentially, a domain name IP address is a set of four numbers that are divided by dots. In particular, the domain name IP address looks like 203.23.56.166, and each one of these numbers can be between 1 and 255. Just like the mentioned function of the telephone numbers and the reference numbers in the library, the domain name IP address is said to be that important in the internet. For a computer machine to be able to be located by the other computers on the internet, it is important that it must have its own domain name IP address that is distinct than the others.

The primary intention for creating the system of domain name IP address is for the people to connect to other computers on the internet by just applying an easy to remember name instead of a particular IP address. So as result, it is therefore important that the domain name must have matching IP address for it to function correctly. This is also one of the best explanations that show how the domain name and IP address are connected. This explanation alone led to the association between the two and thus being identified as a domain name IP address.

With the domain name IP address, you have the freedom to type either the domain name or the IP address into a web browser and you will definitely see the same page. It is for the reason that when you type a domain name into the web browser, the Internet Service Provider or ISP will then search the associated IP address in their Domain Name System server. That is how the domain name IP address works

Big Considerations For Domain Name Owners

April 17th, 2009 admin No comments

As domain names continue to surface, the numbers of people who engaged into getting, purchasing, and owning a domain names rises. This event therefore leads to an increase in number of the domain name owners. Given such fact, the International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers or the ICANN with its Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and the Anti-cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) recently presents serious dangers to the innocent domain name owners.

So, there surfaced a number of considerations for the domain name owners to avoid loss of their domain names. One of the considerations that the domain name owners should give attention to lessen the danger of losing their domain names is to get a trademark registration that match their respective domain name. This process is not too difficult for the fact that some of the countries today cater to this service and this is not really required by the law to employ a trademark company.

Following such consideration for the innocent domain names owners’ sake is the act of keeping the Whois information up to date. This is considered to be very important since there are some cases where a court or the UDRP tribunal ruling against particular domain name owners based its judgment in line on incomplete or out of date Whois information. And after doing such move, the domain name owners should also check their Whois and Domain Name System information not just once but always.

Since it is a common case where most of the domain name owners fail to pay their registration fees and therefore lose their domain names, it is therefore necessary for the domain names owners to pay for such registration fees to keep their domain names in function and up to date. One major support for this fact is that Whois information of certain domain name owners that is out of date will only lead to the situation where their domain name registration fee never reached them.

And finally, in cases where someone contacts the domain name owners regarding their domain names, it is important that they are aware that regardless of how folksy or friendly a letter could be from someone asking their domain names, any answers by the domain name owners that makes of the possible blunders may probably cause a lawsuit or UDRP complaint taking advantage of the domain name owners’ blunder. But, if the domain name owners really receive a UDRP complaint, then it is a right time to respond the complaint, since the majority of UDRP decisions against the domain name owners are default decisions that is where the domain name owner failed to respond to the complaint.
